Fashion Event in Review: TRUNK by Moxi Enterprises

by June Ann D’Angelo (www.geminijunemoon.com)

What: TRUNK by Moxi Enterprises

When: June 26, 2014 (7-10pm)

Where: Moxi Enterprises (1939 S Vandeventer 63110)

Where were you last Thursday? Because if you were not at TRUNK by Moxi Enterprises, a quarterly pop-up boutique, you definitely missed out on a great night to support local fashion and a great charity. From the moment you grabbed your Schlafly beer, some lite bites from Sasha’s, took a fun party pic with Kitchen Table Promotions and walked into the room housing 12 St. Louis designers and artists, you were smacked right in the face with a vibrant and colorful energy that makes me proud to live in St. Louis. Two of those designers (Suzanne Ley and Paulie Gibson) even manufacture their lines locally at Sew, which is under the Moxi Enterprises umbrella.

I must say that CEO Gregg Garland did an amazing job at bringing together local talent that showcased the best of St. Louis while benefitting the non-profit charity partner, Pedal the Cause.

Now let’s get down to business…the actual fashion… The real standouts for me at this event would have to be Suzanne Ley, Paulie Gibson, Michael Drummond and, a personal favorite of mine, AJ Thouvenot.

Suzanne Ley

Instantly as you walked up to the rack that showcased this line, you were immersed in a cohesive story…you could see the thought, the care, the attention to detail…you could see the process.

I had the pleasure of speaking with co-owner Shannon Dougherty at length and she explained to me the beautiful story of how the three partners will all travel to a destination and draw inspiration in that location for their next collection. For the Spring/Summer 2014, they traveled to New Orleans and found inspiration at the Botanical Gardens in this city, which you can see in the gorgeous colors and prints that are carefully placed on their easy-to-wear, sophisticated and well-crafted garments. They will even venture back to that city to shoot their look books!

Shannon was also nice enough to take me over to their manufacturing space (no flights required) and gave me a sneak peek at their Fall/Winter 2014 collection that was inspired by a visit to Seattle.

This guy is one of my absolute favorites. He is St. Louis’s own Betsey Johnson! Always playing with in-your-face colors and patterns, AJ Thouvenot is not scared to be loud and do so with a brilliant edge. When speaking with him at the event, he mentioned that he really likes the athletic quality of using numbers (he really likes 13) in his designs, so be looking out for that, especially in his menswear. He has also been styling up the menswear with printed pockets, which is the perfect touch for that summer casual wear for heading out to the lake!

Fashion Show in Review: Sexuality Expressed

by June Ann D’Angelo (www.geminijunemoon.com)

The latest in lingerie at Doctor John’s Boutique was presented to a frisky crowd last Friday night (May 30, 2014) at Sexuality Expressed held at Blank Space on Cherokee Street. Guests were greeted with gift bags before they could grab a drink at the bar and get settled for the show. What the show lacked in conscience, it made up for with heartbeat. And all the models stomped out to that beat with fierce and fearless walks, however the cohesion of the show was quite lackluster. The lineup bounced back and forth between swimsuits, clubwear, costume, and fetish and had no clear vision other than scantilly-clad gorgeous bodies. Those gorgeous bodies did, however, bring their personalities and amazing abs and even gave out some fun toys to special audience members. Amina Shelton was definitely my favorite model to watch…toned body with amazing lines all topped off with a killer walk. My favorite look of the night would be Playboy model Kara Friedman’s stunning silver monokini that paired perfectly with her bold red lip and platinum blonde hair. The night ended with a peformance from local rapper, Vinny Bee, and then everyone was free to go play with what they found in their gift bags!!!

Model to Watch:  Amina Shelton

Favorite Look of the Night:  Modeled by Kara Friedman

Bermudas, Bermudas

For spring 2014, the traditional “basketball” length shorts will be available for men, but executed in a more sophisticated way. Designers from Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Fendi have shown their take on this trend in previous/current collections. Will guys step out of their comfort zones? They may find the Bermuda trend doable if it is shown in a reasonable way.
